Dønning Community Building

Location : Grimsøystraumen, Lofoten Islands, Norway
Building type : Community Center
Client : Dønning Youth Society
Size : 400 m2
Schedule : Finished 2006
Primary architects : Einar Jarmund, Håkon Vigsnæs, Alessandra Kosberg, Stian Schjeldrup, Nikolaj Zamecznik

The community centre combines restroom facilities and a café for tourists in the tourist season, parallell with all-year-round social facilities and offers for youths.
The vegetation here is low, indicating the harsh local climatic conditions. The building stands on its own, not unlike the big rocks you find scattering the Norwegian landscape left from glacial activities.
The building is relatively closed, with the central communal space surrounded by supporting functions. The entrance is made visible almost as a big mouth. The structure is resolved as simple and cost efficient as possible.
